My Stay at Sandals Royal Plantation, Jamaica

Butler Service, Blue Mountain Coffee and Caribbean Calm

Natalie Wilshaw on 23 Sept 2025

Just over a year ago, I returned from what was possibly the most relaxing 11 nights of my life. I'd wanted to visit Jamaica for years, but I hadn't been to the Caribbean since 1999. Long before this trip became a reality, I used to pore over the Sandals adverts in glossy magazines, dreaming that one day I'd get to experience one for myself. And finally, I did. We chose Sandals Royal Plantation in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, and it turned out to be everything I'd hoped for, with a few lovely surprises along the way. As a film nerd, I also had another reason to be excited about Jamaica. The Tom Cruise film Cocktail has always been a favourite and knowing that parts of it were filmed in Jamaica gave me another excuse to explore beyond the sun lounger. A little Caribbean relaxation with a bit of film-location curiosity thrown in? Perfect.

First impressions of Sandals Royal Plantation

Sandals Royal Plantation describes itself as an all-butler, all-suite, all-ocean view boutique resort. With just 74 suites, it's one of the smallest and most intimate resorts in the Sandals collection, set above the Caribbean Sea in Ocho Rios.  From the moment we arrived to the moment we left, we were treated like family. The service was exceptional, but what stood out most was the genuine warmth of the team. General Manager Omar seemed to remember everyone's name, which is no mean feat when you're looking after a whole resort of guests.

The resort has a wonderful sense of intimacy. You're not dealing with enormous crowds or spending half your holiday walking between restaurants and facilities. Everything feels a little more personal, and that suited us perfectly. The décor is classic colonial in style. Some people might find it a little dated, but I thought it worked beautifully with the architecture. The furnishings were comfortable, and the overall atmosphere felt elegant without being stuffy.

We visited Sandals Dunn's River during our stay, which gave us an interesting comparison. Dunn's River is much more contemporary in design, with a different atmosphere and a much larger feel. Guests at Royal Plantation can also use the complimentary shuttle service to nearby Sandals  Ocho Rios (formerly Ochi), opening up additional dining choices and facilities. It's a lovely option if you fancy a change of scene, but I was always happy to return to the quieter pace of Royal Plantation.

Marquis Oceanfront Butler SuiteOur suite: waking up to the Caribbean

We stayed in a Marquis Oceanfront Butler Suite, and waking up to the Caribbean Sea was a pretty wonderful way to start each day.

The suite had a huge signature king-size mahogany bed, and I honestly can't remember the last time I slept so well on holiday. After a restful night's sleep, there was no rush to get dressed, grab breakfast or claim a sun lounger before everyone else. We could take our time. That, for me, was one of the real luxuries of this holiday. It wasn't about having a packed itinerary or ticking off a list of experiences. It was about having the freedom to do as much or as little as we wanted, knowing everything we needed was close at hand.

What is butler service really like?

I'd never experienced a private butler service before, so I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. Would it feel overly formal? Would I feel awkward asking for things? Would we actually use it?

At Royal Plantation, two butlers share responsibility for your suite on a rota, and you're given a mobile phone so you can contact them directly. Each morning, one of our butlers would come to breakfast to chat about our plans, lunch preferences and dinner reservations. They were always approachable, and we quickly got used to having someone who could help organise the little details.

It's not about having someone hovering over you all day. It's about knowing that if you need something, you have a person to contact who understands your preferences and can help make things happen. The beach butlers deserve a special mention, too. They were brilliant at getting to know what we liked and making sure we had drinks and whatever else we needed without us having to keep asking. I still dream about the coconut shrimp they brought to me on the beach for lunch. Yes, really. Sometimes it's the little things that stay with you long after you've unpacked your suitcase.

My top tip: Don't be afraid to ask your butler about off-menu options. During our stay, they were often able to help with requests, and those little personal touches made the experience feel even more special.

Blue Mountain coffee and leisurely breakfasts

My favourite part of the day was breakfast on the terrace, looking out to sea with a fresh cup of Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee.

I'd heard plenty about Blue Mountain coffee before visiting Jamaica, and I was keen to try it in its home country. I can see why it's so highly regarded. It was delicious, and somehow tasted even better with that view. I've tried to recreate the experience at home, but I haven't quite managed it. I suspect the Caribbean Sea might have had something to do with it.

Food, cocktails and evenings at Royal Plantation

Royal Plantation has five restaurants, each offering something a little different. The choice is smaller than at some of the larger Sandals resorts, but we found there was plenty to enjoy.

Le Papillon serves French-inspired cuisine and was particularly popular with guests, so booking ahead is a good idea. The Terrace offers Caribbean specialities with ocean views, while the Royal Café & Grill is ideal for a more casual meal by the beach. There's also the Tea Terrace for afternoon tea and the Wobbly Peacock, an English-style pub serving pub favourites.

One of the benefits of staying at Royal Plantation is that you can use the shuttle to visit neighbouring Sandals Ocho Rios for even more restaurant options. That gives you the best of both worlds: a peaceful base to return to, with the option of a livelier evening elsewhere.

The resort also offers themed evenings, including Italian and Jamaican nights, sometimes accompanied by a live band or a fantastic singer. And, of course, there are the cocktails. I'm not a big drinker, but the non-alcoholic versions were just as enjoyable, so you certainly don't have to drink alcohol to make the most of the all-inclusive experience.

For a special occasion, you can also arrange a private candlelit dinner, whether in a more secluded setting or on the beach. It would be a lovely touch for an anniversary, honeymoon or birthday.

A typical day in paradise

Our days settled into a wonderfully lazy rhythm.  We'd enjoy a leisurely breakfast, then wander down to our favourite spot on East Beach. We found it particularly peaceful, and it quickly became our go-to place for reading, relaxing and watching the sea.

The beach butlers kept the drinks coming, and before long they seemed to know our preferences almost as well as we did. We'd spend hours doing very little beyond reading, eating, sipping cocktails and enjoying the sunshine. Occasionally, we'd get a tropical downpour. Travelling at the end of September, we had a few during our 11-night stay, but they were short-lived. We'd take a break, let the rain pass and then get back to enjoying ourselves.

It's worth remembering that Caribbean weather can be unpredictable, particularly around this time of year. A shower doesn't necessarily mean a day lost, but it's sensible to keep an open mind about the weather when planning your trip.

After a day on the beach, we'd wander back to our suite to get ready for the evening, often finding snacks waiting for us. Then it was time to decide where to eat, enjoy the entertainment if there was something on, and settle into another relaxed evening.  The entertainment at Royal Plantation is generally low-key, and the resort tends to quieten down relatively early. If you're looking for late-night parties and a lively nightlife scene, this probably isn't the Sandals resort for you. For us, that was part of its appeal.

What's included in your stay?

One of the pleasures of an all-inclusive holiday is not having to think about every drink, meal or activity adding to the bill.

At Royal Plantation, your stay includes dining at the resort's restaurants, snacks, premium drinks, wine and Appleton Estate Jamaica Rum. There is also a good selection of activities for guests who want to be more active, including snorkelling, kayaking, paddleboarding and scuba diving for certified divers. Green fees at Upton Estate Golf & Country Club are included, too, although it's worth checking the current arrangements if golf is high on your list. Airport transfers and the shuttle to Sandals Ochi are also included, making it easy to enjoy the resort and some of the additional options nearby.

If you'd rather explore further afield, there are excursions available at an extra cost. Depending on your interests, possibilities include Dunn's River Falls, bamboo river rafting, catamaran trips and tours connected with Jamaica's music and culture. The Red Lane Spa is another option if you fancy a treatment or a little extra pampering.

You don't need to fill your days with activities, though. That is one of the things I particularly liked about Royal Plantation. There are plenty of options if you want them, but no pressure to do anything at all.  Inclusions and excursions can change, so it's always worth checking the current details when planning a stay.

A little something for the film lovers

As I mentioned earlier, I'm a film nerd, and the connection between Jamaica and Cocktail, starring Tom Cruise, was something I was keen to explore.

There's something special about seeing a destination through the lens of a film you've watched and enjoyed. It adds another dimension to a holiday, whether you're tracking down a recognisable location, learning about the story behind a scene or simply looking at a familiar landscape with fresh eyes.

Jamaica has featured in a number of film productions, making it an interesting destination for anyone who enjoys combining a beach holiday with a little cinematic curiosity.

It's also a reminder that a trip doesn't have to be all about the resort. You can have your relaxation time and still make room for the things that interest you, whether that's film locations, local food, history or culture.  For me, that combination is part of what makes travel so rewarding.

Who would I recommend Sandals Royal Plantation to?

Royal Plantation won't be right for everyone, and I think that's worth saying. If you're looking for a huge resort with lots of restaurants, a busy pool scene and entertainment that continues late into the night, you may prefer one of the larger Sandals properties. But if you want a quieter, more intimate resort where personal service is a big part of the experience, it's well worth considering.

I'd particularly recommend it to couples looking for a romantic escape, a honeymoon, an anniversary celebration or simply some time away from the demands of everyday life.

The all-suite accommodation, butler service, ocean views and relaxed atmosphere make it a lovely choice for anyone who values comfort and being well looked after.

And if you're wondering whether butler service is worth experiencing, I'd say it's something I'd happily do again. Having someone take care of the details meant we could spend less time organising our holiday and more time enjoying it.

Would I return to Sandals Royal Plantation?

Absolutely. We returned home feeling as though we'd genuinely switched off, which is not always easy to do on holiday.

Sandals Royal Plantation gave us the kind of break where you can slow down, enjoy being together and let someone else take care of the details for a change.

And after 11 nights, I could quite happily have stayed for another week!
