Arriving at Bordeaux is one of the real standout moments of the voyage. Rather than docking far outside the city, Azamara Quest sails directly inland along the Garonne River, bringing you right into the heart of one of France’s best-known wine capitals. Spend the afternoon moving between wine bars and grand riverside squares before the city lights begin reflecting across the water as you sail away later that evening.

Further along the route, the atmosphere shifts again in Bilbao, where contemporary galleries sit alongside old-town streets packed with pintxo bars and cafés. One moment you’re standing outside the titanium curves of the Guggenheim Museum, the next squeezing into a lively local bar for small plates and txakoli wine. Stops like Honfleur bring something completely different again, with its colourful harbourfront and slower Normandy pace giving the itinerary a real sense of variety.
