Debunking the myths of family cruising - and why it is for you...

31 May 2019

Have you ever considered taking the whole family on a cruise as an alternative to the traditional ‘All Inclusive Beach Hotel Getaway?’ If not, why not? Quite a loaded question, and everyone will have their reasons and/or fears, however, let me dispel some of these myths and get you considering a cruise as a viable option for your next family holiday. Myth # 1: I don’t want to be on a ship with thousands of people The reality is not like this at all, in fact you will probably feel less like you are surrounded by hundreds of people on a ship, then if you were in a hotel. These ships are so cleverly designed and the staff so well trained, that you will in reality not find this an issue at all. Sure, there will be times when you are all together, like at a show, but that happens at resort hotels too, and on a ship, they put the show on at least twice, so you will never miss the entertainment because you are eating, or still at the pool! If this reason is the main reason for you not fancying a cruise, then I can recommend several companies that have either smaller ships, or a lower guest ratio ensuring your personal space at all times. Myth #2: I’m worried my child will fall overboard The minute you step foot on a cruise ship, you will realise that this is just not possible. There are feet high glass panes all around the ship which provide both protection from the elements and also prevent potential ‘Man Overboard’ situations. To go overboard, you would have to move furniture to climb on to and literally catapult yourself over. Do not worry, your small people will be perfectly safe. And on that note, the often complimentary children’s clubs, babysitting services and entertainment for the children is so vast and brilliantly done, that you can sip your sangria safe in the knowledge that your children are having a whale of a time meeting other children and getting involved in all sorts of exciting fun and games! Myth #3: I like All Inclusive and I don’t want any scary bills to be presented at the end of my holiday Full board is always included, and you will also have a wide array of alternate dining options, and with a lot of the cruise companies drinks and gratuities are included too. However, where drinks are not included you can usually purchase a drinks package before your holiday so that you know exactly what you are spending before you depart. I can also help you with alerting you to the campaigns that cruise companies will offer to include your drinks, Wi-Fi, gratuities etc. These do come around and sell like hotcakes when they do so it pays to have someone in the know! So, these are some of the reasons I hear when I suggest a cruise as an alternative as to why they don’t want to give it a try. Here are some reasons why you absolutely SHOULD consider taking your family on a cruise of a lifetime on your next trip away. Reason #1: No-fly zone Aside from unpacking once and seeing lots of destinations to keep everyone amused, you can also cruise from the UK eliminating the need to fly and be restricted to the amount of luggage you can take, not to mention the hassle of airports and costs associated. When you are travelling with a family with small children, as I well know as I have 3, this has to be a massive consideration. Flying with toddlers is never fun! Reason #2: Unrivalled variety There is entertainment for all the family, from kids clubs, amazing dining options, swimming pools, go-kart tracks, water parks, ice skating rinks, bowling alleys, cinemas, ‘Go Ape’-style activites, zip lines, virtual reality, amazing spas, casinos, sports bars, robotic bars, mini golf - I could go on and on. On the flip side, if all this fills you with dread, then are lots of companies out there where there are no bells and whistles and you can simply be together as a family, eating, playing games and visiting the amazing destinations on your itinerary. Basically whatever ‘floats your boat’ (see what I did there?), we can tailor a cruise to you and your needs and requirements. I hope I have gone someway to possibly, maybe, help you consider a cruise for you next family holiday. If you have any other concerns, please do get in touch and hopefully we can lay to rest some of your fears. I can’t wait to take my brood on a cruise, my son is happy wherever there is a buffet and a water slide, and quite frankly I’m happy when they are happy.

Why you should choose Hurtigruten

23 April 2019

Expedition cruising is the new way to cruise, and in this blog I am going to tell you why you should be doing it too, and especially why you should consider Hurtigruten. Hurtigruten Cruises is probably not a name you recognise but in fact they have been around since 1893! They know Norway like no other, and for me this is a great place to start for the novice expedition cruiser. The Norwegian coast sits up there with some of the great wonders of the world and for this reason is known as “The World’s Most Beautiful Voyage”. You can choose to travel in the summer and live under the midnight sun, or from October through to March you will have a perfect chance to see the Spectacular Northern Lights. As you are out at sea with no light pollution, the opportunity will never be greater. Even if you have gone to bed and the lights come out, the crew will sound an alarm to let you know the lights have appeared, and all you have to do is wrap yourself In your duvet and hurry up on deck. Where else are you going to get this opportunity? The Norwegian fjords, unlike Iceland, are also in the Arctic Circle, and it is here you have the best chance of seeing the aurora borealis. They are so confident you will see them that they even offer up a free cruise if they don’t appear! If you are feeling more adventurous then why not visit the two extremes of the globe, The Arctic and The Antarctic. Whether its polar bears or penguins that float your boat, Hurtigrutens’ intimately-scaled expedition ships will get you there, up close and personal. On board each vessel is an expert Expedition Team who will be your hosts for the duration, both onboard and off. They will provide lectures in subjects such as geography, history, geology and wildlife, making these excursion educational for all the family. They also run a Young Explorers Programme for children aged 7-13 free of charge where the children will get a deeper understanding of nature, climate and culture and introduced to topics like wildlife, local food, environmental protection and famous explorers! This is not a ‘normal’ cruise line, when you sail with Hurtigruten you will be travelling with other like-minded adventurers who value personal growth and exploring over luxury. You won’t find waterslides and casinos’, however, you will find a casual, relaxed atmosphere with great, locally sourced food set amongst stunning surroundings. To top this all off, in an age where we are all having to consider our earth and its sustainability, Hurtigruten are leading the way, and are constantly striving to reduce their environmental footprint. Everything on board that can be recycled is, and they even reuse heat from the engines’ cooling water and exhaust to warm up the hot water tanks on board. All engines have also been optimised to reduce CO2 emissions, and itineraries amended to achieve the most efficient operation of the ships. All vessels also operate a ‘plastic free’ environment and you also have the opportunity to partake in a beach clean on your voyage during summer months. With very competitive prices for a full board cruise, Hurtigruten are for me the perfect introduction to Expedition Cruising. If you would be interested in finding out more, please do get in touch.

Tokyo!

18 April 2019

Bonkers, bonkers, bonkers! Are the best words to describe Tokyo, however, I completely loved it! You see people in fancy dress racing go-karts around the city, cute mascots waving at you, arcades with rows and rows of grabbing machines, bright neon lights! The Japanese love singing, dancing, and do 'cute' to the extreme. Our hotel was attached to a train station, in fact lots of Tokyo is underground and whilst it can be quote daunting, it is well signed, and you soon start to get the hang of it. However, it does mean you can leave the hotel and be straight on a train to wherever you want to go. They run very regularly and efficiently as you would expect. Our main reason for going to Tokyo was personal, as our dear friend was running in the Marathon. This meant that our experience there was very much based around the Marathon and what she wanted to eat and when etc. It did mean that we participated in the Friendship Run with them, a 3.5-kilometre jog around one of the parks, which was a great experience. We did the touristy thing and went on a boat trip; which we always like to do anywhere we go as I think you get such a different perspective from the water. We walked and walked, visited temples, stopped for beer and coffee, ate noodles and did everything you would expect. The day of the Marathon it tipped it down, ok for the runners, not so nice for the spectators. That aside, she did really well, we were excellent as support crew if I do say so myself, and the Tokyo organisation was super-efficient! Afterwards we celebrated with champagne and then went on the hunt for the best burger in the city! Our taxi driver took us down some back streets where he deposited us, were we not fuelled by the champagne, we might have been worried, however, he was right and where you would least expect it was a burger restaurant, and indeed it was spectacular! The next day was our last and I had pre booked a street food and beer tour of the Golden Gai region, famed for its hard to find back streets and tiny bars, barely able to seat more than 5 people at a time. Our guide was very knowledgeable and showed us how to navigate these tiny streets and where to locate the best bars with no 'cover charge.' We were fed sushi and sashimi at a superb sushi bar, and Ramen noodles homemade in house. In another bar we were served Gyozo and pork belly, all delicious, and very filling. Then like big kids we went on the grabber machines and sang a bit or karaoke (when in Japan)! I loved Tokyo, and if you are interested in going, I would have lots of top tips to share with you, but it is so dependent on what you are interested in doing as we are all different. There are so many places I would have loved to have got to, but we ran out of time, as I said out trip was centred around the Marathon rather than seeing the sights. We failed to see Mount Fuji (she was hiding behind a cloud), I didn't get to a ski resort, and I would have loved that, and there were a few future technology museums and art galleries that I wish I had got to, but hadn't booked, and now I know I should have done as the queues were huge. Next time. Japan, I will be back.

From Osaka to Kyoto

02 April 2019

We arrived in Osaka and were met by our representative who handed over all our tickets and documentation we would need for the next 12 days. She was so helpful, and it was reassuring to know that this would be the kind of service that any clients I sent here would also receive. It was good to feel so welcomed in a new and strange country. We headed to our hotel for the night by bus, which I must add had excellent Wi-Fi, a small thing, but when you have just come from China with its Great Firewall, it had been greatly missed! In fact, the Wi-Fi throughout out most public spaces in Japan was excellent. Out hotel was small but well-appointed and had every possible amenity you could need including the amazing Japanese toilets, that come with heated seats, music and bidet facilities! They never ceased to amaze me throughout out my trip. Simple things! We were only in Osaka for one night and wish we had stayed longer. It seemed like an incredibly vibrant city which is renowned for its street food which I know I would have loved, next time! The next morning, we were bound for Kyoto. We did manage to get on the wrong train, which was a bit slower, but we got there anyhow. We checked into our hotel and then our guide met us in reception. She took us to all the traditional sights, the temples, gardens and palaces, whilst being incredibly knowledgeable on all the history and culture. It was fascinating to hear how the Japanese Tourist Board are encouraging locals to wear the traditional Kimono's and are offering incentives like discounts in restaurants and shops if they do. It’s a great idea and really does make it all seem much more authentic and as you would expect. As you can imagine a lot of students have taken them up on their offer, it’s the same the world over! I loved learning how to pray properly in a temple, and about all the different God’s that they worship, taking your shoes off everywhere you go and walking on the Tatami matting, it was all so different yet wonderful at the same time. We learnt so much from her which was to prove invaluable as we went on our journey. The next day we headed to Hiroshima, and I will blog separately for this! On day three, we rose early for a cycling tour. Again, our guide spoke good English and was very knowledgeable. This was my husband’s favourite part of the whole trip I think, and it was lovely to cover so much of the city, cycling down the back streets, stopping every now and then to go into a temple or garden. Kyoto is so flat, so it was not at all challenging, and if you are strapped for time it is a great way to pack loads in without being too strenuous. That evening we met a different lady who took us on a street food walking tour. Whilst with her we were lucky enough to spot our first Geisha, or Geiko’s as they are known in Kyoto, scuttling down a back street. My picture is not great as they move so fast and I was not quick enough! We tasted the local Macha biscuits, sake, visited the market with its weird and wonderful foods, finishing it all off with a sumptuous banquet style meal, without 10 courses, each one tiny and delicious. By now we’re starting to feel we have got the hang of the public transport system, which once you do get the hang of it is actually quite simple! The trains are incredible, especially the bullet trains. All are so clean and on time! I loved also, how everyone waits for passengers to disembark before getting on board themselves. Manners in Japan are impeccable, and I loved it. So, after the culture and prettiness of Kyoto, we were off to the mountains to see the Snow Monkeys and indulge in the thermal springs. Three trains to catch, wish us luck!

The British Airways First Class Experience

29 March 2019

When we flew to Beijing last month, I was lucky enough to be flying in First Class, something I have never done before, and to say I was excited is an understatement! We arrived at Heathrow Airports Terminal 5 in plenty of time in order to ensure we could enjoy the experience to the max. You have your own separate area in the terminal to check in, making it feel very exclusive and private from the outset. Check in was a breeze and done and dusted in just a few minutes. Then you go straight through your own personal security, two conveyor belts and plenty of staff, so there was no queuing, no weaving through barriers, just straight through, do not pass go, into the lounge! You have the choice of the Galleries First lounge or the Concorde lounge, we opted for the latter as it was lunch time and you get sit down table service. Food was divine, three courses, with champagne and wine to accompany the meal. After lunch, my husband went through to the bar and it was time for my massage in the Elemis Spa. I had a 15 minute back and shoulder massage, they do it over your clothes and apply lovely smelling aromatherapy oils to the towel in front of you, making me feel lovely and relaxed and ready for my 11-hour flight ahead. Time to board, and we were late, too much champagne in the lounge, oops! We weren’t the last though thank goodness. Anyhow, not a problem, we were met at the door of the aircraft by our crew and shown to our seats, next to each other but totally private too, with plenty of storage, a pair of pyjamas, slippers, a lovely Liberty amenity kit, and another glass of champagne! We were the only two in the cabin, so felt well and truly spoilt. After take-off we were given the option of when to have our meal and what we wanted. I chose the beef and wine to go with it, of course, and to have it at dinner time, 6.30.pm. Then I settled down to watch a movie. The crew were attentive throughout without being in your face, and we wanted for nothing. Dinner arrived and was delicious and so well presented, how they manage a pudding with hot chocolate sauce and ice cream on a flight I’ll never know! After my meal it was time for a sleep, my bed was made for me with mattress and duvet, I then snuggled down for a few hours’ sleep. On waking, it was breakfast time, again we were offered a huge selection of food, I chose the omelette, which came with a lovely plate of fresh fruit and warm breads. Before we knew it, we were landing, and our few hours of pure luxury were sadly over. It was great arriving in Beijing, knowing we had a full day ahead of sightseeing, but feeling as refreshed as we possibly could be after a 11-hour flight! British Airways offers a product that is both elegant and luxurious without being ostentatious. Pure understated Class. Thank you BA.

Two days in Beijing

29 March 2019

In February 2019 we (myself and my husband), flew to Beijing for two days as the start of an epic two-week trip to China and Japan. We were able to travel under the transit visa programme as we were going to be in Beijing under 72 hours and were flying onto another country. This all went very smoothly despite my nerves and we entered China with no problems at all. Our guide, Tony, met us in arrivals and we were soon in our private taxi and whizzing towards Beijing ready to start exploring. Firstly, he took us to Tiananmen Square, which I found incredibly nostalgic as I do remember the riots in the 80’s and the scenes and images that I am never likely to forget. I did find it odd though that Chinese people were forever asking to have their picture taken with us, as Tony explained, they have probably only ever seen a Western person on the television before, never in real life, I felt quite flattered and of course obliged them! It also makes you realise the oppressive nature the Chinese have living under a dictatorship, big eye opener for me. From Tiananmen Square you can walk straight through to the Forbidden City, which is vast and very beautiful. We walked and walked, and the jet lag was certainly beginning to take its toll! However, I knew we had such a short time here I wanted to soak up as much as I could. Tony’s knowledge was incredible and there wasn’t a question he couldn’t answer. I learnt so much about China and its history and the madly dictated to lives they lead. One thing I will say about Beijing, and this is more for the ladies, the public loos leave a lot to be desired. They are generally a hole in the ground and there is never any loo roll let alone hand soap! So do take tissues and anti bac with you at all times! After the Forbidden City we went to the visit the old Hutongs, old shanty type buildings where the older generation of Beijingers (technical term) still live in almost slum like houses. There are as many as 10 households sharing 1 toilet! However, Tony says as this generation die off, they are slowly redeveloping the area. The land itself is massively sought after and worth a fortune. Still, it was good to see a traditional side to Beijing and walk amongst the locals, watching them play chess in a park or playing with their children. After this I was more than ready to head to our hotel for a nap and a refresh before dinner. Tony recommended us a local restaurant which specialised in Peking Duck, we went, and he was right it was delicious and not overly expensive. They carve the duck at your table and serve with all the usual pancakes and sauces that we are used to. On Day 2, it was an early start as we were off to the Great Wall. It took about an hour and a half to drive, and we were so lucky as it was so quiet when we got there, it felt like we had the place to ourselves. It pays to go out of season! We took a bus to the cable car, then rode up to the wall. We then set foot for about an hour and a half, marvelling at how they built this amazing structure so long ago, and so high up, it is an incredible feat of engineering. The slopes and climbs are very steep though so be prepared and wear appropriate clothing and footwear and take sun screen! Wow, wow, wow, go if you ever get the chance. Then we whizzed back to Beijing and visited the Summer Palace and gardens, very beautiful with gorgeous landscaped gardens. There is a lake where you can take boat rides, but unfortunately for us, the water level was too low, so it wasn’t possible for us. There is apparently not much rain fall in Beijing, so the water has to be bought in, madness! Then it was back to the hotel, and then out for dinner again. This time I had been recommended a restaurant called TRB Hutong, so had booked before we came. The food was outstanding, as was the service. On the pricey side, but if you like good food and wine, then I would highly recommend. It takes some finding as is down the dark alleys of the Hutongs, but worth the trip. The next day it was time to say goodbye to Beijing, I do think that our two short days was enough to see everything we wanted to, Tony and our driver collected us from the hotel and transported us to the airport where we boarded our flight to Osaka to start the next chapter in our exciting adventure. Coming soon! Osaka!

Cruising the Amalfi Coast on Azamara Club Cruises

18 October 2018

In July 2017, I went on an Azamara Cruise with my husband, Stuart, to celebrate his 50th birthday. I booked it as a surprise and wasn’t sure whether I would enjoy a cruise, but realised quickly that it wasn’t all about me, but that he would enjoy it as he is not one for sitting around on a beach, so bit the bullet and booked, and wow am I glad that I did! To say I am a cruise convert is probably an understatement, I think I loved it more than he did, especially the casino, but more about that later. Our cruise was around the Almalfi Coast, 8 days starting in Venice where we were docked for 3 days. Azamara cruises are very much about destination immersion and you will generally find that you stay in a particular location for a few days or late into an evening, in order to truly experience where you are. Whilst in Venice we walked the streets by day and spent the evening on board the ship enjoying the fabulous food and all-inclusive drinks! Our cabin was 6001 which is a balcony cabin right at the front of the ship, which was perfect, because in July there is an evening in Venice to celebrate Festa del Redentore. Venice has several festivals that commemorate episodes of plague that overtook the city in the 16th and 17th centuries. The biggest one of these festivals is the Festa del Redentore, or Festival of the Redeemer, which marks the end of a big epidemic in 1576, as it cumulates with an enormous firework display on over the water, all the small boats come out a toot their horns when it finishes, it was quite a spectacle and one I feel privileged to have witnessed, and we had a birds eye view from our balcony! Departing Venice, we opted to have breakfast on our balcony and watch this beautiful city disappear into the distance behind us. It wasn’t too sad though because we knew we had another 5 places to see and a day at sea ahead to really explore the beautiful Azamara Quest. As I have mentioned before the food quality on board is exceptional, from the freshly grilled tuna wraps at the pool bar to the extensive and always tasty buffet restaurant. There really is something for everyone. I remember thinking ‘they can’t possibly create food for all these people and have it taste as good as it looks?’ but they did, and I was seriously impressed every time I ate something. The crew on board also made everything really special and nothing was too much trouble. One night we opted to dine in Prime C, which is at an extra charge (only $30 p.p.) and free for suite guests, but so worth it as you could literally order everything on the menu if you wanted to! We had a gorgeous table with views of the sun setting into the sea as we dined. We ordered Chateaubriand, and it was hand carved at our table and was quite possibly the nicest steak I have ever tasted. Well worth the visit. On our first day at sea we went along to the ‘Free slots’ session in the casino. Having never stepped foot in a casino before I was unsure what to expect. Anyway, I was very quickly won over when I won over $200 on a slot machine! I promptly converted my winnings in to cold, hard cash and the rest is history I guess. It meant that I could go back every night and discover my passion for Blackjack. Some nights I was up, some down, but ultimately it enabled me to tip the staff a bit extra at the end of the cruise (not essential as gratuities are included) and upgrade my drinks package, more below. As for the wine, Azamara try to get wine from the destinations you are in, so for us it was Italian red and whites (such a hardship!), I opted to upgrade myself (with my slots winnings) to the ultimate package whilst on board so that I could also have unlimited prosecco, Stuart was happy with beer and wine, but it was nice to have the option to pick and choose, and it really isn’t that expensive at about $20 a day. The staff tend to get to know what you like to drink too, so at about 4 o'clock every day I was hand delivered a glass of prosecco without having to ask, pure luxury. On our voyage we visited Kotor in Montenegro and its spectacular landscape, we even climbed to the top of this enormous mountain which led to a ruined medieval village. It was a steep and hot climb, but we were accompanied by the Captain and Cruise Director and they bought along plenty of water and snacks. This is one of the nicest things about a small ship, and particularly Azamara, you get to the know the crew well and they get to know you too! We also went to Corfu, Taormina in Sicily and Amalfi, finally ending in Rome where, sadly, we had to disembark. I think the thing about a cruise is it gives you an insight into a few places all at once, without having to lug bags around and gives you ideas as to where you might like to spend more time in the future. For me Amalfi is somewhere I need to go back to as I would like to hire a car there and go and explore further. Some of the other passengers did this and highly recommended we do it next time. We just didn’t know what to expect I guess, so just went with the flow and didn’t plan too much, which also had its advantages. We left the Azamara Quest with mixed emotions, it was sad that our journey was coming to an end, but we had one night in Rome to look forward to, and I was looking forward to seeing our children who we had not seen for over a week! I would 100% book another cruise and am already planning one for next year to Japan, Russia and Alaska, with Azamara.

Sacha Jenkinson I must thank you for a spectacular trip to Thailand which was spectacularly well organised - every driver, the flights, all the detail made my first long haul trip after only flying once before a complete success. The hotel choices were great and the food there was great, the Elephant Hills experience was out of this world, a truly unforgettable trip and the lovely touches like the postcard and the luggage labels and documents folder were also appreciated. A relative late starter to travelling abroad I was reassured by the excellent standards and organisation. Trip of a lifetime but would highly recommend Sacha at Travel Counsellor to anyone. Thank you.

Sacha organised a trip to Rome for us. I had never flown before and she was very patient with all my questions and left me calm and safe in the knowledge that it was all taken care of. The hotel was in an excellent location in Central Rome. The transfers from and to airports were on time and had polite drivers. Everything was as it should be. Priority boarding was organised and allowed us to avoid check-in. I would highly recommend Sacha for any trip she has taken out the pain of organising everything. Sacha has organised an amazing ten days in Thailand for us later this year. Can’t wait and know that I don’t have to worry about the detail! Thanks Sacha.

Sacha has made the whole process of booking a holiday a pleasurable experience, not something I anticipated with 9 people to please and 4 of them based in another country! Nothing seems to be too much trouble and she even works on a Sunday and late into the evening! I would have no hesitation in recommending Sacha to family and friends.

Upon being introduced to Sacha immediately she made the process to book our first abroad holiday easy and clear. By asking a few simples questions she provided us with a few ideas of location with our budget completely met including all transfers and extras. We received regular updates how she was getting on with our searches. We felt comfortable communicating with her and didn't feel pressured at all to book with her like you do if you went to the high street travel consultants.

Sacha has been fantastic on every aspect of the planning of our summer trip. She has worked so hard to create, discover and obtain the best options for us as a family of 5. I know our requirements weren't straight forward but that didn't phase Sacha in the slightest.... she's a brilliant Travel Counsellor, and we would highly recommend her to all our family and friends.

I have to say you have made the experience simple and pleasant - you started off with a vague idea of me wanting a safari, and without losing the essence of that idea, you came up with suggestions that I hadn’t thought of and we’ve ended up with a fabulous holiday that would never have crossed my mind! That’s a skill right there! I can’t tell you how much I’m looking forward to it, and my partner is over the moon as she loves elephants. So thanks for all your work! I’d be happy to recommend you and use you again!

Full disclosure - Sacha is a friend. But her professionalism and the way she really took time to work out what we wanted from each of the holidays she has booked for us was top class. Lots of great suggestions, took all the pain out of the research process and we have the confidence we have someone who's got our backs in the unlikely event something does go wrong.
