How to plan a Vietnam north to south itinerary for a luxury holiday
Plan a luxury Vietnam trip with a smooth north to south route. Boutique hotels, Halong Bay cruises, mountain escapes and expert planning for a seamless journey.
Planning a trip through Vietnam feels exciting, but it can also feel like a maze. This is a country with ancient cities, mountains wrapped in mist, bays full of limestone karsts and beaches that stretch for miles. A north to south route is the best way to take it all in without rushing, especially if you want a premium experience with private guides, boutique hotels and a route that flows naturally.
Here is how I design this style of trip for my clients.
Start in Hanoi
Hanoi brings you into the heart of Vietnamese culture. You have grand boulevards in the French Quarter, tiny hidden coffee shops in the Old Quarter and gorgeous boutique hotels with a real sense of character. I usually plan two or three nights here. It gives you time to enjoy a guided street food walk and take in the history without feeling like you are rushing.
Cruise through Halong Bay or Lan Ha Bay
This deserves at least one night on the water. A small luxury boat is worth every moment because it is calm, peaceful and incredibly scenic. The afternoon kayaking, the floating breakfasts and the stargazing all create the kind of memories people talk about for years.
Head into the Vietnamese mountains
Most travellers skip this area, which is why my clients love it. The mountain regions offer terraced rice fields, peaceful villages and cool air. Boutique lodges up here give you a quiet break between major stops and add a very different flavour to the trip
Spend days unwinding in Hoi An
Hoi An is a favourite for good reason. Picture lantern lit streets, beautiful hotels, quiet beaches and restaurants that always impress. This is a lovely place to stay four to five nights. You can explore the ancient town, cycle to the countryside and enjoy private cooking classes.
Finish in Ho Chi Minh City
Ho Chi Minh City offers rooftop cocktails, modern museums and plenty of energy. It is also the best place to visit the Cu Chi Tunnels or spend time with a local guide who can show you how the city has evolved. Two or three nights is perfect.
Why this route works so well
Travelling from north to south gives you a sense of flow. Each region feels different, yet the journey still feels connected. When everything is booked under one protected itinerary you also have peace of mind. If anything changes, your trip is protected and I can rearrange the affected parts for you.
