Getting to the beach Mykonos
Getting to the beach
I recently stayed in Mykonos Town - and managed to pull myself away from the stunning pool to check out the local beaches on the south coast . Mykonos has an excellent bus service to the beaches
Getting to the Beaches:
Take the Bus from Fabrika
The easiest and cheapest way to reach the southern beaches is by bus from Fabrika in Mykonos Town. The bus station is a short walk from the centre ( near the windmills) , and from here services run to several of the main south‑coast beaches throughout the day to as late as 11pm
Tickets are inexpensive, the buses are straightforward to use, and journey times are usually around 10–20 minutes depending on where you are heading. It is an ideal option if you want a relaxed, stress‑free way to get to the sea without worrying about parking or driving on unfamiliar roads
Mykonos is known for its glamorous beach clubs, and sunbed prices reflect that in some areas. Depending on the beach, the venue and how close you are to the water, loungers can be on the expensive side, particularly at the big‑name party spots
That said, there are still beaches where you can enjoy a fantastic day by the sea at more reasonable prices. It is always worth checking whether the rate quoted is per person or per bed, and whether there is a minimum spend attached, before you settle in.
My Pick- Platys Yialos: Relaxed, Good Value & Great Food
One beach that really stood out for us was Platys Yialos. It had a lovely, relaxed atmosphere, with a good choice of restaurants and a more down‑to‑earth feel than some of the louder party beaches.
The sunbeds here were also comparatively inexpensive by Mykonos standards. Prices ranged roughly from around 10 euros per person at the lower end up to about 40 euros per person for better positions or more premium venues. This made it easy to tailor the day to your budget, whether you simply wanted a couple of loungers and a light lunch, or something a little more indulgent
If you are looking for a beach with a welcoming vibe, decent value and places to eat and drink just behind the sand, Platys Yialos is a great choice.
Party Beaches: Higher Energy, Higher Price
If your idea of Mykonos is all about music, dancing and big‑name bars, the island’s party beaches will certainly deliver. Just be prepared for sunbed and day‑bed prices to be noticeably higher here, often with minimum spends, especially in peak summer.
These spots are perfect if you are planning a big day out with friends and are happy with a higher overall spend. For quieter, more relaxed beach days, somewhere like Platys Yialos will suit you better
Beach Boat Between the Bays
Another lovely way to experience the southern coastline is to use the boat that runs between the beaches. Tickets are around 20 euros per person, and it is a scenic way to hop from one bay to another, combining different beaches in a single day
We only discovered this boat on our last day, so it is a tip well worth knowing in advance. Start at a favourite beach, then use the boat to explore a different cove for a change of scene before heading back
With easy bus connections from Fabrika, a mix of laid‑back and lively beaches, and the option of exploring by boat, the south of Mykonos offers wonderfully simple, memorable days by the sea.
What Is the Mykonos Beach Boat?
Along the south coast of Mykonos, a small boat service runs between several of the main beaches. Instead of travelling by road, you move from bay to bay by water, stepping straight off the sand onto the boat and back onto the sand at the next stop.
It usually connects a series of popular beaches such as:
- Platis (Platys) Gialos
- Paraga
- Paradise
- Super Paradise
- Agrari
- Elia
It is a relaxed, informal way to see more of the coastline in one day, and it turns a simple beach outing into a mini coastal adventure.
What Times Do the Buses Run?
Bus times in Mykonos vary by season, route and even by month, so there is no single timetable that stays the same all year. However, there are some helpful patterns you can explain to clients:
- In high summer (roughly June to early September)
- Buses to the main beaches usually start running in the morning.
- Services tend to be more frequent during the day, especially to Ornos and Platis Gialos.
- There are often evening and late‑evening buses back to town, particularly from the busier beaches.
- In shoulder seasons (spring and autumn)
- There may be fewer departures, with some routes running only every hour or two.
- Evening services can finish earlier, so clients should pay close attention to the last bus back.
Because the exact times change, the most accurate information will always come from:
- The timetable displayed at Fabrika or at each beach’s bus stop.
- The ticket office or local staff, who can confirm the current schedule and last return times.
