Arctic Adventure - Discovering Tromsø
Exploring Tromsø and its surroundings
I recently enjoyed an incredible short break to Tromsø in northern Norway and I am still on a high from Arctic adventures and Northern Lights magic. The trip started in the most surreal way: I even spotted the Northern Lights from the plane on my way up to Tromsø, a shimmering green curtain in the sky that set the tone for the whole journey.
Tromsø itself is such a fun and walkable little city. I loved ducking into one of the smallest bars I have ever seen, wandering past the famous “northernmost” McDonald’s, and visiting the striking Arctic Cathedral with its dramatic triangular design and beautiful stained glass. For those feeling brave, there is even the option to try a plunge in the Arctic sea followed by a warming sauna near the harbour, a very local way to embrace the cold.
By night, I stayed in an Aurora camp, where the sky felt close enough to touch, and went husky sledding through pristine snowy landscapes. It honestly felt like stepping into a real‑life winter postcard.
There is so much more you can experience in and around Tromsø: dedicated Northern Lights tours and cruises, seasonal whale watching with the chance to see orcas, take the cable car to top of Tromso, and Sami reindeer experiences where you can learn about indigenous culture and traditions. If you prefer to travel at a slower pace, there are also fantastic cruise options from the UK to the Norwegian fjords, a wonderful way to soak up the scenery in comfort without flying.
If Tromsø or the Norwegian fjords are on your wish list, I would love to plan and book your own Norwegian adventure, tailored around the experiences that matter most to you.
