Brac Island, Croatia

May half term

Vicky Dyer on 24 May 2024

Croatia has always been a dream destination of mine, and this May half term, I was finally able to tick it off my bucket list. Despite forecasts suggesting unpredictable weather, we were treated to endless sunshine during our stay—even in the more northern part of the country, after flying into Split Airport.

Our Croatian adventure centred on the picturesque island of Brac. Croatia’s unique shape and sparkling coastline means there are countless islands and regions to explore, each with their own personality. Brac dazzled us from the start, and I already know we’ll return—there’s still so much more of the Adriatic’s crystal-clear waters and warm Croatian hospitality to discover.

We based ourselves just outside the tranquil village of Milna, approximately 1.5 miles away. The area felt wonderfully authentic and unspoilt by mass tourism. This was reflected in every aspect of our trip: from the peaceful atmosphere to pleasantly surprising prices. Souvenirs and those all-important scoops of ice cream cost about half as much as in some of the better-known tourist towns we visited, letting us enjoy more for less.

While I didn’t quite make it up in time to catch a sunrise, the sunsets over the bay were absolutely magical—painting the sky in hues of gold and rose, and inviting us to linger a little longer each evening.

Croatia truly exceeded our expectations and gave us a taste of the real Adriatic, away from the usual crowds. Whether you’re seeking serenity, adventure, or unbeatable value, Brac Island is a hidden gem that deserves a spot on every traveller’s must-see list.
