Experience Andalucian culture

Granada is an enchanting Andalusian city renowned for the breathtaking Moorish palace of the Alhambra

Granada is one of those places that quietly gets under your skin, and it has become a city I truly love to recommend for a short break, especially for couples. My husband and I went for a few nights in December and were genuinely surprised by how much the city offers. You have this wonderful contrast between the energy of a historic Spanish city and the feeling of being close to nature, with the Sierra Nevada mountains in the background giving everything a dramatic, almost cinematic setting.

The city itself is a mix of mostly flat streets with some hilly areas as you head towards the Alhambra and the older quarters. If you are not keen on steep walks, it is very easy to just jump in a taxi up to the Alhambra Palace for only a few euros, which makes it accessible to almost everyone. If you do not mind a bit of a climb, the winding streets and staircases through the Old Town are absolutely beautiful, and walking up that way feels like you are slowly stepping back in time.

On our trip we stayed at the 5 star Aurea Washington Irving, a beautiful hotel right next to the Alhambra Palace and around 15 minutes’ walk from the centre of Granada. The location was perfect for us: close enough to stroll into the city for tapas, shopping and sightseeing, yet peaceful and atmospheric beside the palace itself. I would highly recommend this hotel for couples looking for something a little special, with comfort, style and a truly privileged setting.

The Alhambra Palace is, of course, the highlight and a major reason I recommend Granada. Set on a hill overlooking the city, it feels like a world of its own: ornate palaces, tranquil courtyards, intricate Moorish details and sweeping views across the rooftops. You can choose to stay up near the Alhambra itself, which is incredibly atmospheric, or base yourselves down in the main part of the city where you can sit in the squares, people watch and dip into shops, cafés and restaurants. Wherever you stay, the palace is close enough to be a central part of your break and really anchors the whole Granada experience.

What really won us over, though, was the feel of the city day to day. Granada has a lovely blend of traditional Spanish culture and a slightly bohemian, studenty edge, which keeps it lively without feeling overly touristy. There are gorgeous tapas bars where you can linger over a glass of wine and small plates, characterful coffee houses that are perfect for slow mornings, and some very high end restaurants for a special evening out. You can easily spend a day just wandering, discovering pretty corners, historic buildings and little streets that open out into sun filled squares. The architecture is full of character, with layers of Moorish and Spanish history in the façades and churches, and in December we still enjoyed plenty of sunshine, which makes everything feel that bit more uplifting on a city break.

Another reason I recommend Granada is how easy it is to include as part of a slightly longer trip. On our visit we twinned it with Alicante, which was only a few hours’ drive away, and it worked brilliantly to combine inland culture with some time by the coast. From Granada you can also drive to Málaga or even cross over to Seville, so it is very flexible if you want to turn a simple city break into a richer Andalusian itinerary.

For couples, I think Granada offers a really lovely balance: romantic views, fascinating history, great food, a relaxed local feel and the bonus of winter sunshine. It feels different enough to be special, yet familiar enough to feel instantly comfortable. That mix of atmosphere, culture, scenery, easy connections and a superb 5 star hotel beside the Alhambra is exactly why I am so happy to recommend Granada in Spain as a city break destination. If you would like me to tailor a short Granada escape, or build it into a wider Andalucian itinerary, I would love to help you plan it.Strolling through the streetsAlhambra gardensMoorish ArchitectureEnjoying the palaceSnow topped mountain viewAurea Washington Irvine Hotel
