Disneyland Paris: Why This First-Timer Came Home a Complete Convert

How I discovered that Disney is not just for kids, why three nights is the sweet spot, and the simple extras that make the magic even better

Claire Jackson on 01 Jun 2026

At the beginning of June I finally did something I have been talking about for years: I took my very first trip to Disneyland Paris. As a complete novice, I went in with an open mind and very few expectations. I wasn’t sure how much I would enjoy it as an adult, and I definitely did not know my way around the parks, rides or extras. A few days later I came home absolutely buzzing. I had a fabulous, fun-filled break, fully embraced my inner child and fell back in love with the magical Disney classics. More importantly, I came back with a fresh perspective and plenty of practical insight to share with my clients who are considering their own Disney adventure. This blog is my honest view as a first-timer: what surprised me, what really worked, and what I would recommend to anyone planning a trip to Disneyland Paris.

To enter the park you pass under the grand Disneyland Hotel and through the sweeping archway with Main Street and the castle in view in the distanceAmazing creativity to produce these characters out of legoCheck with your hotel as to what time the characters are around to meet each dayAt night the castle is lit up ready for the evenings firework and light showEven if the weather is a bit changeable the place is still just as magicalHere I am meeting 'Belle' from Beauty & the BeastEnjoying a fabulous dinner at the new Regal View restaurant where you can meet some Disney PrincessesSo many kids embrace the experience and love dressing up for their visitWith the PhotoPass you get digital downloads of any photos that are taken on the rides or around the parksWe were very lucky and got a tour around the magical Disneyland Hotel which is at the entrance to the parksWe stayed at the Hotel Cheyenne which was home to Jessy & Woody from Toy StoryAnd each with their own distinct design & feelPlenty of hotels to choose from either onsite or offsiteAnd the newer characters are tooAll the old favourites are still thereDisney is not just for kids! Adults can have fun too.Top tip - buy a PhotoPass and share amongst the familyEmbracing Disneyland Paris as a First-Timer

I arrived at Disneyland Paris very much a beginner. I didn’t know every ride, I had no set touring plan, and I wanted to experience it the way many of my clients do on their first visit: slightly unsure, a bit overwhelmed by choice, but very excited. Very quickly, the nerves disappeared. The moment you walk down Main Street towards the castle, with the music playing and the smell of popcorn in the air, it is hard not to feel the magic. I found myself grinning at the parades, singing along to songs I had not heard in years and getting genuinely excited for the evening shows. As an adult, what I loved most was the sense of escapism. For a few days you step out of everyday life and into a colourful, carefully created world where the biggest decisions revolve around which ride, which snack or which show to choose next. It is uplifting, nostalgic and incredibly good fun.

Disney Is Not Just for Kids

One of the biggest myths I had in my head before travelling was that Disneyland Paris is mainly for families with young children. Yes, there are plenty of excited little ones, but as I explored the parks I noticed just how many couples there were enjoying a playful, romantic break, groups of friends celebrating birthdays or milestones, and adults with no children at all who were simply there for the rides and the atmosphere. The storytelling, theming and entertainment are designed to appeal to all ages. From high-energy attractions to beautifully staged shows, there is so much that adults can enjoy on their own terms. Once I allowed myself to really lean into it, I realised how refreshing it is to just have fun without overthinking. If you have ever thought, “Isn’t Disney just for the kids?” my answer, from experience, is a very definite no.

Why Three Nights Is the Sweet Spot

Another key lesson from my trip: you really need enough time. I quickly realised that trying to “do it all” in a night or two would have felt rushed and stressful. With a minimum of three nights, I found that there was enough time to enjoy both parks properly. We could re-ride favourites without feeling guilty, and we had space for slower moments, photos and café stops. The pace felt like a holiday rather than a race. Disneyland Paris is full of detail and little touches that you only notice when you are not constantly clock-watching. Those extra moments, like pausing to watch a mini-show or wandering through a themed area you might have otherwise rushed past, are part of what make the trip feel truly magical. For my clients, this is now a big part of how I will structure a Disneyland Paris recommendation: aiming for at least three nights where possible so you can enjoy the experience rather than just sprint through it.

The Magical Extras That Make a Big Difference

Before I went, I had heard phrases like “PhotoPass” and “Premier Access” but did not fully understand how much they could shape the experience. Having now tried them in real life, I can say they are well worth considering.

The Disney PhotoPass is ideal if you want to capture professional-quality photos without constantly reaching for your phone. Photographers and ride cameras pick up those special moments for you, and having them all in one place made it easy to relive the trip afterwards.

For families, couples or anyone celebrating something special, this can be a lovely way to make sure everyone is actually in the photos.

Queues are part of any theme park holiday, but Premier Access can help reduce the time you spend standing in line for certain attractions. Used smartly, it can help you fit more key rides into each day, and it can take the pressure off tight schedules and make the whole experience feel smoother, especially at busier times. It is not a must for everyone, but used in the right way for the right people it can be a real game-changer.

As a first-timer, I loved the idea of combining a meal with the chance to meet Disney characters without hunting them down in the park. Character dining offers guaranteed character interactions, brilliant photo opportunities, and a more relaxed way to tick off those must-meet favourites. For younger children, this can be one of the most memorable parts of the trip. For adults who love the characters, it is pure fun and nostalgia. Part of my job now is to help clients decide which of these extras will genuinely enhance their trip, based on who they are travelling with and what they value most.

How Meal Plans Can Save You £££

Food is a big part of any holiday budget, and Disneyland Paris is no different. With tempting snacks, themed restaurants and all those “just one more treat” moments, costs can creep up quickly if you are not prepared. One of my key takeaways is to consider the meal plans which can offer real value. They can make it easier to set and stick to a budget, they can take away the daily worry of “how much is this going to cost, and they allow you to enjoy a good mix of quick and sit-down meals without constant mental maths. They are not a one-size-fits-all answer, but I now have a much clearer picture of when they work best and for whom. When I talk to clients about Disneyland Paris, we look at how they like to eat, how long they are staying and what kind of restaurants appeal to them, then decide together whether a meal plan is a smart choice.

The Disneyland Paris App: Your Pocket Guide

As a first-timer, the Disneyland Paris app quickly became my best friend. I relied on it throughout my stay, and it made the whole experience feel more organised and less overwhelming. From the app you can access live show and parade times, so you do not miss the big moments, an interactive map of the parks, helping you find rides, restaurants and facilities, wait times for attractions so you can plan your route more efficiently, options to book activities and check useful general information. Instead of wandering around unsure of what to do next, the app helped us make simple, informed decisions on the go. For anyone visiting for the first time, I would say downloading and using the DLP app is almost essential.

From Novice to Disney Convert

Looking back on my trip, I am so glad I went as a first-timer with an open mind. I experienced the same questions and nerves many of my clients feel: Will I enjoy it as an adult? How long do I really need? Are all these extras actually worth it? Will it feel magical or just manic? After a few fabulous days in the parks, I can confidently say that Disneyland Paris exceeded my expectations. I embraced my inner child, relived so many magical Disney classics and came home tired in the best possible way. Most importantly, I returned not just as a happy visitor, but as a Travel Counsellor with first-hand knowledge. I now understand the practicalities as well as the magic: how it feels to navigate the parks for the first time, where planning really pays off, and which small decisions can transform the whole experience.
