24 Hours in Nairobi
If you are heading to Kenya for a safari, I highly recommend spending 2 nights in Nairobi before heading on your adventure.
24 Hours in Nairobi: Boutique Charm, Giraffes and Hidden Treasures
Our plane touched down in Nairobi just after 10.00pm, even at that hour, Jomo Kenyatta International was a hive of activity: a blur of luggage trolleys, families reuniting and travellers heading off on safari. After navigating the incredibly busy arrivals hall, we stepped out into the warm Kenyan air and made our way to our hotel for the night: a beautiful boutique property called Menzili House.
A Boutique Oasis: Menzili House
From the moment we arrived, Menzili House felt like a sanctuary. With characterful spaces, stylish African accents and a calm, homely atmosphere that makes you instantly exhale after a long flight. After checking in, we enjoyed a glass of wine before sinking into bed, ready to make the most of our 24 hours in the city.
The next morning, we woke refreshed and enjoyed an amazing breakfast at the hotel. Fresh fruit, perfectly brewed coffee and warm dishes cooked to order set us up for a full day of exploring Nairobi and its surrounds.
Morning: The Giraffe Centre
Our first stop was one of Nairobi’s most iconic experiences: the Giraffe Centre. This conservation sanctuary plays a vital role in protecting and increasing the population of the endangered Rothschild’s giraffe, and it is a wonderful place to learn more about these gentle giants.
The staff were incredibly welcoming, and our guide, Nathaniel, was both friendly and deeply knowledgeable. He talked us through the history of the conservation programme and, most importantly, how to interact with the giraffes safely and respectfully. Under his guidance, we learned how to feed them correctly and were able to capture some wonderful photographs: long eyelashes, velvety noses and those impossibly elegant necks framed against the greenery. Did you know that Giraffes have black tongues?
Beyond the fun of being up close to such beautiful animals, it was moving to see the impact of a conservation project that has helped bring a species back from the brink. It is an experience I would recommend to any visitor to Nairobi, whether you are travelling as a couple, a family or solo.
Midday: Property Visits and Garden Discoveries
After leaving the Giraffe Centre, we spent some time visiting other properties in and around Nairobi. Many of the boutique hotels and guesthouses here are set in lush gardens, which creates a sense of green calm that contrasts beautifully with the buzz of the city.
In one of these gardens, while walking between hedges and flower beds, we spotted a tiny chameleon making its way across the footpath towards the bright blooms. It was a reminder of how rich the local ecosystem is, even within the grounds of a hotel. Many properties also boast beautiful views out towards the Ngong Hills.
Lunch at Talisman Restaurant
For lunch, we headed to Talisman Restaurant, a long-time favourite in Nairobi’s dining scene. The menu is wonderfully eclectic: you can order anything from comforting roast chicken to fresh sushi, gourmet burgers and lighter, contemporary dishes.
We lingered over a relaxed meal, enjoying not only the excellent food but also the atmosphere. The décor is stylish yet laid-back, with a strong connection to nature: lots of greenery and outdoor seating, accented by art and design pieces that reflect the local aesthetic. Bougainvillaea and other flowering plants spill over walls and trellises, continuing that Nairobi theme of blending indoor and outdoor living seamlessly.
Afternoon: Shopping for Local Treasures
After lunch, we explored some of Nairobi’s local shopping spots. This is where the city really shines for anyone who loves unique, handcrafted pieces.
We browsed stalls and boutiques filled with beautiful dresses and garments in vibrant African fabrics, Handcrafted toys and gifts for children, Leather goods and accessories with a distinctly local flair and stunning glassware and decorative pieces
Many of these items can be shipped home, which is ideal if you fall in love with something substantial or simply do not have room in your suitcase. I picked up a selection of gifts to take home for the children, along with a few personal treasures that will always remind me of this trip.
Evening:
After a full and satisfying day exploring Nairobi and its surroundings, we checke into our new hotel for the night - Kwetu. Dinner that evening was at the in-house restaurant, the Upepo, which offered a relaxing and comforting end to the day. Good food, warm hospitality and a chance to unwind after so many impressions made for the perfect finale.
Tired but very happy, we headed back to our room and collapsed into bed, grateful for a day that had combined wildlife, great food, inspiring design and authentic local culture in such a short space of time.
Why Nairobi Works Beautifully as a 24-Hour Stopover
With careful planning, Nairobi can transform from a simple transit point into a highlight of your African journey, full of moments and mementos you will remember long after you have flown on.
