Hong Kong Wonders!

Hong Kong stole my heart from the moment I arrived and it still sits firmly in the number one spot of my all-time favourite cities. It is bold, bright and utterly addictive: skyscrapers piercing the misty sky, neon lights reflecting on the harbour, the constant buzz of ferries, trams and street markets. “Amazing” does not even come close.

I was lucky enough to stop in Hong Kong on the way to Australia in November 2012, and travelling later in the year was a brilliant choice. The weather was warm and humid, but not overwhelmingly hot like the peak summer months, which made it ideal for long days exploring and late nights soaking up the atmosphere.

We stayed at The Langham in Kowloon, and the location could not have been better. Step outside and you are in the heart of bustling Tsim Sha Tsui, with shops, restaurants and the harbour all within easy reach. The service was superb, attentive without ever feeling intrusive, and the breakfast selection was on another level. I still remember walking into the breakfast room and being genuinely stunned by the sheer choice, one of the biggest and most impressive spreads I have seen anywhere in the world.

Hong Kong is a city that awakens all your senses at once. The streets are alive with honking traffic, the ding-ding of trams and snatches of conversation in different languages. Neon signs glow above you, steam rises from street-food stalls and there is always the delicious scent of something cooking nearby: dim sum, noodles, roast duck, sweet pastries. It is no surprise there are said to be over 10,000 restaurants here. You can feast like royalty, from tiny, family-run eateries to stylish rooftop bars with views over the skyline.

One of the absolute must-do experiences is a ride on the Star Ferry. For just a couple of dollars, you glide across Victoria Harbour between Kowloon and Hong Kong Island, with the city skyline towering around you. It is simple, cheap and completely unforgettable.

If you can, time your harbour crossing with the evening light show. At 8 pm each night, the buildings on Hong Kong Island light up and dance in time to music in the Symphony of Lights. I really recommend getting on the ferry a little early so you can claim your spot on deck. When the boat pauses mid-harbour and the show begins, surrounded by glittering skyscrapers, it is one of those jaw-dropping “is this real?” travel moments.

Hong Kong’s markets are another highlight and each one has its own personality. Temple Street Night Market buzzes with life once the sun goes down: lanterns, food stalls, fortune tellers and row after row of stalls selling clothes, gadgets and souvenirs. Stanley Market has more of a laid-back, seaside feel, with a great mix of arts, crafts and clothing. The Jade Market is perfect if you are interested in jewellery, trinkets and traditional stones said to bring luck and protection. You can find some brilliant buys but be ready to barter with a smile. Even if you are not shopping, wandering these markets is an experience in itself, full of energy, colour and atmosphere.

For those iconic city views, The Peak is non-negotiable. Getting there is half the fun. You can take a bus from near the Star Ferry on Hong Kong Island, which is inexpensive and gives you some lovely glimpses of the city as you wind your way up. From there, hop on the Peak Tram, a historic funicular that pulls you up the steep hillside. The ride feels almost vertical at times, and when you step out at the top the views will genuinely take your breath away. Skyscrapers, harbour, green hills and outlying islands all spread out beneath you, especially magical at sunset or after dark when the city lights up. Do not forget your camera.

What I love most about Hong Kong is how it combines so many contrasts in one compact place: soaring glass towers and hidden temples, bustling markets and peaceful parks, world-class dining and simple street snacks. It is a city that rewards curiosity and every turn seems to reveal something new.

All in all, Hong Kong is a truly captivating destination with so much to offer, whether you are stopping over for a couple of nights or planning a longer stay. I have plenty more tips, stories and photos from my time there, so if you are considering Hong Kong or a stopover en route to somewhere else, I would be delighted to help you shape the perfect trip.
