Windstar Wonders on the Windsurf

I recently travelled with Windstar Cruises on the Windsurf – and if you’re picturing a small ship with actual sails, you’d be absolutely right… and it’s just as magical as it sounds.

There’s something really special about sailing this way. One of my favourite moments? Sitting in the hot tub, cocktail in hand, listening to Pirates of the Caribbean music as the sails were raised. Honestly, it felt like a movie scene… all in the name of research, of course!

The Windsurf carries just 324 guests, and on our sailing there were around 270 onboard – so it never felt busy or crowded at all. At just 14,000 tonnes, it’s a really small ship, which gives it such a relaxed, boutique feel. You’re not queuing, not rushing… it’s just easy. If you’re used to the bigger ships, this is something completely different – far more personal and a bit more special.

Life onboard is relaxed and intimate, with that lovely small-ship atmosphere. The Amphora Restaurant was a real highlight – the steak was absolutely perfect, and the whole dining experience felt special without being over the top.

The itinerary was just as good. We started in Lisbon and sailed to Cádiz, where I took the train to Jerez for a day out – such a lovely trip and well worth doing. Gibraltar was great fun too – I took the cable car up the Rock, saw the famous monkeys (very cheeky!), and explored the tunnels, which were really interesting. We finished in Málaga, which was the perfect relaxed end to the cruise.

If you’re looking for something a bit different, Windstar really does offer a unique way to travel – small ships, incredible destinations, and a style of cruising that feels far more personal… and just a little bit special.
