Winter Sun in Gran Canaria

A Week of Warmth, Relaxation and Great Food

Maria Foxwell on 08 Mar 2026

The Weather -Much Better Than the Apps Said Gran Canaria is a brilliant choice for winter sun. While the weather apps stubbornly showed 17 degrees, the reality was very different. Most days we enjoyed temperatures in the mid-twenties, warm enough to stretch out on a sunbed, feel that lovely heat in your bones and really unwind. Our days fell into a very happy rhythm of lying on a sunbed, soaking up the sun, freshening up with dips in the sea, reading books, listening to podcasts and simply enjoying being together. Pure switch-off mode.

Where We Stayed -Puerto Rico

We based ourselves in the resort of Puerto Rico, which is dramatically built into a steep hillside. We were lucky enough to stay towards the top, rewarded with fantastic views across the resort and out to the ocean.

Up at the top of the hill we had everything we needed, Restaurants, Bars, Cafés and shops.

From there it was a short taxi ride, or a steep walk, down to the beach. You definitely feel the hill in your legs, but it is worth it for the views and the choice of places to eat and drink.

Beach Time - Why We Loved Amadores

From Puerto Rico you have a choice of two main beaches, Puerto Rico beach or Amadores (which quickly became our favourite).

Amadores is a lovely, man‑made course sandy beach with calm, gentle sea. It is ideal for families, couples, or anyone who likes to just stroll straight into the water on a gradual slope rather than navigate big waves.

Along the beachfront you will find a variety of restaurants and bars, Ice cream parlours, Pizza places, Shops, Great beach facilities, including showers and toilets

You can very easily spend a full day there, then stay on into the evening to enjoy the atmosphere of beach life as the sun goes down. The sunsets at Amadores are absolutely beautiful, with the sky glowing over the bay. It really is a place I cannot recommend highly enough for a winter sun escape.

Accommodation -From Self-Catering to All Inclusive

One of the things I like about Puerto Rico and the surrounding area is the choice of accommodation to suit different styles and budgets.

You can stay in, Simple self‑catering apartments (as we did), Mid‑ to High end hotels and all inclusive properties if you prefer everything on hand

For us, self catering was the perfect option. We enjoy eating out and trying different local restaurants, so having a base with basic facilities and being close to bars and restaurants was ideal. If you would prefer the convenience of all inclusive, that is absolutely possible too, and I can match you to the right hotel for your budget and preferences.

Food & Drink - So Much Variety

Food was definitely a highlight of the trip. There is a huge variety of options to suit all tastes and budgets, from relaxed beach snacks to more special dinners.

During our week we enjoyed, Traditional Spanish tapas, Fresh seafood paella, Burgers and club sandwiches, Cooked breakfasts, from full English to dishes like eggs Benedict, Roast dinners, All‑you‑can‑eat Chinese buffets, Steakhouses and more

It is a very easy destination if you are travelling with mixed tastes, fussy eaters, or specific dietary needs, because there is simply so much choice. Whether you want something quick and casual or a long, leisurely meal with a bottle of wine, you will find it here. It really is a good all‑round resort.

How I Can Help You Plan Your Own Winter Sun Escape

If you like the sound of, warm sunshine in the middle of winter, relaxed beach days and gentle sea swimming, beautiful sunsets over the bay, a huge choice of restaurants and bars, , accommodation to suit your style and budget then Gran Canaria, and especially the Puerto Rico / Amadores area, could be a perfect fit.
