Sri Lanka In Style: A Personal Journey With A Private Driver‑Guide

Stuart Graham on 09 Mar 2026

From Negombo’s bustling fish market to tea‑clad hills, cool rooftop pools and Weligama’s surfy shores, Sri Lanka is a destination that rewards slow, immersive travel. On my recent journey, a private driver‑guide and a handful of carefully chosen boutique hotels transformed a great itinerary into something truly unforgettable. Here is how Sri Lanka pairs perfectly with the Maldives for a cultural adventure followed by complete barefoot luxury.

Some destinations are best explored slowly, with time to soak up the scenery, the stories and the small everyday moments. For me, Sri Lanka is exactly that kind of place.

On a recent trip, I travelled with a private driverguide arranged through our trusted destination partner, Columbus Travel. We wound our way from Negombos lagoon to the Cultural Triangle, into tea country, on to Ella and finally down to the south coast, staying in a collection of beautiful boutique hotels along the way.

What turned a fantastic itinerary into something truly special was the guiding. Columbus’s guides are not just drivers who point out the sights: they are highly trained, well educated and incredibly thoughtful hosts who soon become an indispensable part of your adventure.

Negombo Beginnings: Villa Hundira & The Fish Market

We started with a warm meet and greet at Colombo Airport, followed by a short drive to Negombo and our first stay at the charming Villa Hundira: a boutique hideaway on a tranquil waterway, with individually designed rooms, local artwork and wonderfully relaxed, homely service. On our first evening, the owners of Columbus joined us for dinner with our guide and their sales manager, a lovely introduction to their passion for Sri Lanka.

The next morning, our guide Roshan took us to Negombo’s bustling fish market. Fishermen brought in the day’s catch, colourful boats bobbed in the water and stalls were packed with every imaginable variety of fish. Out on the sand, millions of fish were laid out drying on the beach, creating an extraordinary patchwork of silver and rustcoloured rows. With Roshan explaining, translating and pointing out details, it felt immersive rather than overwhelming.

Culture & Wildlife: The Cultural Triangle

From Negombo, we headed inland towards the Cultural Triangle, stopping at the Dambulla Cave Temple, where ancient murals and statues glow out of the rock. Roshan’s explanations brought the site to life in a way no guidebook can.

Our base for two nights was Aliya Resort & Spa, a contemporary, elephantthemed resort with a beautiful infinity pool overlooking the jungle and iconic views of Sigiriya Rock. Swimming with Sigiriya framed on the horizon was a real pinch me moment.

The next day we visited Minneriya National Park. Roshan travelled with our safari driver, who led the tour and knew the park inside out. Watching herds of wild elephants grazing and playing at close range was magical. Afterwards, the driver even invited us back to his home for refreshments, proudly showed us the snake that lives in his garden and picked fresh fruit for us to try: one of those authentic, unscripted moments you simply cannot plan.

That afternoon we had a handson introduction to Sri Lankan cooking in a local village, complete with the most delicious fresh coconut sambal, before ending the day at Sigiriya. I climbed as far as the Lions Paw, where my vertigo sensibly told me to stop, and still enjoyed wonderful views and a real sense of the scale of this remarkable rock fortress.

Kandy & Tea Country

Next up was Kandy and the stylish Kandy Myst Hotel, with its rooftop infinity pool and sky bar soundtracked by afro beats. An early morning swim at sunrise and a visit to the Temple of the Tooth Relic with Roshan gave us both modern city buzz and deep cultural insight in a single stop.

From Kandy we climbed into the heart of tea country, winding through sweeping valleys and emeraldgreen slopes to reach the exquisite Camellia Hills. This fivebedroom tea bungalow sits high above Castlereagh Reservoir and feels like a relaxed country house, with views that change constantly as the light moves across the water and hills. Roshan had a wellearned day off here, so it was just us and the lovely lodge team, walking through the plantations and relaxing by yet another beautiful infinity pool.

Ella, Weligama & Galle

After two nights we continued via Nuwara Eliya (and some of the best samosas I have ever tasted) to Ella, arriving with time to hike Little Adam’s Peak for big hillcountry views. Our accommodation here was a private villa set high above the valley, with a magical infinity pool, its own helipad and a private chef who cooked a superb dinner for us on our first evening. It felt like our own sanctuary in the sky.

From the cool hills we dropped down to the south coast, basing ourselves in the surf town of Weligama at W15 Beach Club, a stylish beachfront boutique hotel with a contemporary, surfchic feel. Days were deliciously simple: watching surfers, strolling the sand and unwinding by the ocean after our time inland.

On our final day we explored Galle Fort, with its cobbled streets, colonial architecture and tempting little shops, then stayed on into the evening for dinner at a gorgeous local restaurant chosen by Roshan, who joined us. It was the perfect goodbye to Sri Lanka: good food, great company and the sense of having really connected with the country.

From Galle, we continued our journey to the Maldives, the ideal contrast of barefoot luxury and whitesand relaxation after a week of touring and discovery.

Why The Right Guide Matters

Looking back, what really bound this trip together was Roshan and the wider Columbus Travel team. Their guides are highly trained and deeply knowledgeable, but they are also warm, personable and exceptionally well organised. They think a step ahead, quietly adapting the itinerary, rearranging train journeys for the best views, adjusting timings to avoid crowds and suggesting justright restaurants and detours.

When a member of our party needed to see a doctor, Roshan simply took charge: he found a suitable clinic, arranged the appointment, helped with translation and ensured everything went smoothly. By the end of the journey, he felt far less like a guide and far more like a friend.

Planning Your Own Sri Lanka & Maldives Adventure

If Sri Lanka is on your radar, whether as a standalone destination or combined with the Maldives, I cannot recommend highly enough exploring it with a private driverguide and a carefully chosen mix of boutique hotels and characterful villas.

From Negombo’s lagoons and the ancient wonders of the Cultural Triangle, to tea country’s misty hills, the dramatic scenery of Ella and the surfwashed beaches of the south coast, Sri Lanka offers an extraordinary variety of experiences in a relatively compact area. Add the Maldives at the end, and you have a holiday that combines cultural discovery with complete relaxation.

I work closely with my trusted partners in Sri Lanka and the Maldives to design bespoke itineraries that match your style of travel, preferred pace and budget, always with the reassurance of highly trained, thoughtful guides looking after you throughout your time in Sri Lanka.
