Exploring North Iceland: An Unforgettable Adventure

Veronique Surry on 15 Nov 2025

Join me on an incredible journey through North Iceland, where stunning landscapes and natural wonders await. From the rejuvenating geothermal waters of the Forest Lagoon to witnessing breathtaking Northern Lights and majestic whales in Húsavík, every moment was filled with awe and unforgettable experiences. Let's dive into this adventure!

Sometimes, travel stories just stick with you, and this adventure through North Iceland is one that will definitely be etched in my memory. It was my second visit to Iceland, but my first time heading north. On my first trip, I met this amazing lady named Audrey on the plane. She was British but had moved to Iceland and kept talking about how beautiful the north was. “You’ve got to go back,” she said, and just like that, two years later, I found myself on a plane with my travel buddies, ready to explore!

Day 1: Welcome to Akureyri!

The moment we landed in Akureyri, I was filled with excitement. Our tour guide, the wonderful Lilja Aðalsteinsdóttir from The Travel Viking, greeted us with her charming smile and endless passion for her beautiful homeland.

First up was the Forest Lagoon, and let me tell you, it was pure bliss! Imagine soaking in warm, geothermal water while sipping a drink at a swim-up bar, all while taking in the stunning views of the fjords. It was a perfect way to unwind after the flight.

And then came the real treat: that night, the Northern Lights decided to put on a show! We watched in awe as they danced across the sky, painting it with all sorts of magical colors. It felt like we hit the jackpot on our first night there!

Day 2: Chasing Natural Wonders

Day two kicked off with a full-day tour, and wow, did we get lucky with the weather! We started our day at a viewpoint overlooking Akureyri town, soaking in the gorgeous scenery.

But the highlight? The stunning Goðafoss waterfall at sunrise! Seriously, it looked straight out of a fairy tale. Each spot we visited, from the cool pseudo-craters of Skútustaðagígar to the wild lava formations at Dimmuborgir, was more beautiful than the last. Oh, and the geothermal baths at Mývatn and Hverir? Mind-blowing! Lilja shared so many cool stories about her country, and her enthusiasm made everything even more special.

Day 3: Whale Adventures in Húsavík

Waking up to soft snowflakes falling outside was like a scene from a movie. On day three, we headed to Húsavík, known as the “Whale Capital of Iceland.” We were super excited for our whale-watching adventure with @northsailing, and it did not disappoint! We spotted around 15 humpback whales, and watching these magnificent creatures breach was nothing short of magical. It felt surreal to share that moment with friends.

After the whales, we had an unforgettable encounter with Icelandic horses. These guys are so sweet! And of course, what’s an adventure without a little thrill? We jumped into the freezing sea and then relaxed at the Hauganes Baths. Soaking in warm water while taking in those breathtaking fjord views? Yes, please!

To top it all off, we had a gentle snowfall greeting us on our last night in Akureyri, making everything feel even more magical.

Day 4: Farewell, Akureyri!

As our time in Akureyri wrapped up, I wanted to soak in every last bit of this winter wonderland. We strolled through the snow-filled streets, did a bit of sledging, popped into some cute souvenir shops, and enjoyed warm coffees by the river. It was the perfect way to end this incredible journey.

North Iceland isn’t just a place on the map; it’s an adventure waiting to happen, filled with stunning landscapes and rich stories. I loved every moment of this trip and feel so inspired.

So, if you’re thinking about where to go next, consider North Iceland. Trust me, the magic is real, and the landscapes are calling your name. Ready to explore? 🌍✨
