This island is a lovely choice if you still want that Balearic sunshine, but with a gentler rhythm than July or August. September is ideal for spending time around Cala Macarella and Cala Macarelleta, wandering the harbour in Ciutadella, or heading to Binibeca for whitewashed lanes and relaxed seafood lunches by the water. The Camí de Cavalls coastal trail also feels much more inviting once the strongest summer heat has passed, with stretches around Cala Galdana and Son Bou giving you sea views without needing to rush.

San Sebastián for food, film, and beachside city breaks

This elegant Basque city feels especially good in September, when La Concha Bay still has that end-of-summer glow and the city leans into one of its biggest annual events, the San Sebastián International Film Festival. It’s a great month for mixing beach time with pintxos in the Parte Vieja, walks up Monte Urgull, and slow lunches in Gros before heading back towards Zurriola Beach. The food scene is reason enough to visit, whether you’re keeping things casual at bars like Gandarias and La Cuchara de San Telmo or planning something more special at one of the area’s celebrated restaurants.

For something more autumnal, La Rioja is hard to beat in September. Around Logroño and Haro, the vineyards are busy with the grape harvest and the landscape starts to shift into warmer tones. Early mornings are made for the Real Alcázar and the orange-tree courtyards of Santa Cruz, while later on you can cross the Guadalquivir to Triana for ceramic shops, tapas bars, and riverside drinks. As the light drops over Plaza de España, the city takes on that warm, cinematic feel that suits unhurried wandering. It’s also a great time to lean into Seville’s food scene, from salmorejo and jamón to small plates at traditional spots tucked down narrow side streets.

The Costa Brava works beautifully in September because you can still enjoy the sea, but the smaller towns feel less crowded. Cadaqués is a standout, with its white houses, waterside restaurants, and easy access to Portlligat, where Salvador Dalí’s former home looks out across the bay.
