Experiencing River Cruises in Europe

River Cruise Conference Special in Amsterdam March 2026

I have just returned from the CLIA River Cruise Conference feeling genuinely excited about what is ahead for river cruising. Spending time with industry leaders, hearing about new ships and innovations, and stepping aboard a variety of vessels has confirmed that the future on the rivers is very bright.

There was a strong sense of confidence from the cruise lines, with updates on new builds, refreshed itineraries and more immersive experiences ashore. River cruising is evolving, with a real focus on comfort, design and personalisation, which means more choice and flexibility for every type of traveller.

As part of the conference, I spent four nights on board Viva Cruises’ Enjoy, sailing from Düsseldorf to Antwerp, Rotterdam and Amsterdam. It was a fantastic way to experience the river life and the ship itself. Dining was a real highlight, with excellent food in the main Riverside Restaurant, more relaxed bites in the Bistro, and Italian flavours in Moments, the speciality restaurant. The ship spans three decks with cabins featuring French balconies, so you can watch the river scenery glide by from your own space. Each cabin is thoughtfully appointed with modern comforts, including a flat‑screen TV, Nespresso® machine, RITUALS® toiletries and air conditioning. Free bike hire adds an active option for exploring. To keep value for money, excursions are not included, but because you are docked right in the heart of cities, you can simply walk off the ship and make your own way, staying fully in control of your time and budget.

A real highlight of the wider event was visiting several other ships, including AMA Serena, Amadeus Riva, Emerald Luna, Riviera’s Geoffrey Chaucer, Riverside Debussy, Avalon and TUI. Seeing them first‑hand makes all the difference. You quickly appreciate how each one has its own character: some feel like chic, contemporary boutique hotels, others lean into a more classic and elegant style.

Across the board, there is a clear emphasis on spacious cabins, inviting public areas, high‑quality dining and thoughtful outdoor spaces where you can relax and watch the scenery drift by. These details help me match the right ship to the right person, whether you prefer something modern and informal or more traditional and refined.

Another key theme was innovation. Lines are offering more varied excursions, from gentle guided walks and cultural visits to more active options like cycling and hiking. There is also a growing focus on wellbeing, slower travel and sustainability, with newer ships often quieter and more efficient.

Over 70 Travel Counsellors attended the event, which was a fantastic chance to share knowledge and strengthen relationships with cruise partners. Speaking directly with the teams behind the ships means I can ask specific questions on your behalf and understand the finer details that do not always appear in brochures.

All of this translates into better, more tailored advice for you. Whether you are new to river cruising or an experienced guest looking for something different, I can draw on fresh, first‑hand insight to help you choose the right river, ship, cabin and itinerary.
