Where to cruise when: 6 destinations to book at the perfect time of year

One of the biggest advantages of cruising is the ability to visit destinations when they're at their very best. Whether that's exploring Norway beneath the Midnight Sun, sailing through the Caribbean during the winter months, or discovering Japan during cherry blossom season, choosing the right destination at the right time can completely transform your holiday. If you're wondering where to cruise next, here are six destinations that are particularly rewarding during specific times of the year.

Where to cruise when: 6 destinations to book at the perfect time of year

Spring: Japan

One of the most popular times to visit Japan is during spring, and it's easy to see why. Between March and April, cherry blossom season brings a wash of soft pink colour to parks, gardens, and city streets across the country. Cruise itineraries often combine major cities, such as Tokyo, Osaka, and Hiroshima, with smaller ports that many land-based travellers don't reach. Alongside the blossoms, you'll find ancient temples, futuristic skylines, exceptional food, and a fascinating mix of tradition and modern life. The mild temperatures and low humidity also make it a comfortable time for sightseeing.

Summer: Norwegian Fjords

From May through to August, long daylight hours allow you to fully appreciate the dramatic scenery. Towering mountains, waterfalls, glacier-fed lakes, and colourful waterfront towns create spectacular views throughout the voyage. The Midnight Sun in northern Norway adds another exciting element, with daylight stretching late into the evening and sometimes through the night. Cruising is one of the best ways to experience the fjords, allowing you to sail directly into landscapes that are often difficult to access by road. Our top tip? Choose a cabin with a balcony so you can wake up to towering fjords and views each day.

Autumn: Mediterranean

While summer often steals the spotlight, many prefer the Mediterranean in autumn. During September and October, temperatures remain pleasantly warm across destinations, such as Italy, Greece, Croatia, Spain, and Turkey, but with fewer crowds than the peak summer months. Historic cities become more comfortable to explore, beaches remain inviting, and local restaurants feel a little less busy. It's also an excellent time to enjoy longer port days without the intense summer heat.

Winter: Caribbean

When temperatures drop closer to home, the Caribbean comes into its own. From December through to April, the region enjoys warm weather, hours of sunshine, and ideal conditions for exploring islands both large and small. Whether you're visiting Barbados, Antigua, Saint Lucia, the British Virgin Islands, or the Bahamas, winter offers some of the most reliable weather of the year. Cruising works particularly well here, allowing you to wake up in a different tropical destination each day while enjoying all the comforts of your ship in between.

Early Summer: Alaska

For a completely different kind of cruise experience, nowhere beats Alaska. The season runs from roughly May to September, with June and July often considered prime months for wildlife spotting and outdoor exploration. Expect snow-capped mountains, glaciers, dense forests, and the possibility of seeing whales, bears, bald eagles, and other wildlife in their natural habitat. Many itineraries include scenic cruising through glacier-filled waterways, where the ship itself becomes one of the best viewing platforms imaginable.

Festive Season: Northern Lights Cruises

For something truly memorable, consider a Northern Lights cruise during late autumn or winter. Sailings through Norway and into the Arctic Circle offer the opportunity to search for one of nature's most extraordinary displays while also visiting destinations like Tromsø, Alta, and the North Cape. Along the way, you'll encounter dramatic landscapes, snow-covered scenery, cosy waterfront towns, and a completely different side of Europe. While sightings can never be guaranteed, travelling during the darker months gives you the best chance of experiencing the Aurora Borealis in all its glory.

River cruising has a wonderful way of slowing the pace of travel, allowing you to truly immerse yourself in a destination rather than simply passing through it. That couldn't have been more true for our Head Office colleague, Janet Whitingham, who recently returned from Riviera Travel's ‘Highlights of the Douro Valley & Salamanca’ itinerary on board MS Riviera Rose. Sailing through one of Europe's oldest wine regions, Janet discovered a journey that combines spectacular scenery, charming riverside towns, exceptional food and wine, and fascinating history - all while unpacking only once.
