Why Norwegian Cruise Line's Great Stirrup Cay deserves a place on your travel wish list

When you think of a Caribbean cruise, it's often the ports of call that steal the spotlight. But Norwegian Cruise Line is changing that with its private island, Great Stirrup Cay. Already loved for its white-sand beaches and laid-back Bahamian atmosphere, the island is entering an exciting new chapter with the launch of Great Tides Waterpark in September 2026. Combined with new dining experiences, family attractions, and relaxing adults-only spaces, Great Stirrup Cay is evolving into a destination that's every bit as exciting as the cruise itself. Whether you're travelling as a family, a couple, or with a group of friends, here's why this private island is worth getting excited about.

Why Norwegian Cruise Line's Great Stirrup Cay deserves a place on your travel wish list

Making waves with Great Tides Waterpark

Opening in September 2026, Great Tides Waterpark is set to become Norwegian Cruise Line's biggest and boldest attraction yet. Spanning almost six acres, the water park has been designed to offer something for every age and every level of adventure. Thrill seekers can race down one of 19 exhilarating waterslides, including The Great Slide, the Caribbean's only four-person body slide, or take on the Breakwater Blasters, the region's first duelling Master Blaster slides that propel riders uphill using powerful water jets.

For those looking to push themselves even further, Cliffside Cove introduces the industry's first cliff jumps on a cruise line private island, with guests able to leap from platforms up to 15 feet above the water. Families haven't been forgotten either. Splash Cay offers a colourful splash zone for younger guests, while The Wandering River takes lazy rivers to a whole new level, becoming the industry's first immersive river experience complete with caves, waterfalls, and interactive elements as you float through the island.

A private island designed for everyone

One of the biggest enhancements to Great Stirrup Cay is the variety of experiences now available. Families can spend the day enjoying the water park before relaxing together in one of the private cabanas, while couples may prefer escaping to the Vibe Shore Club, an adults-only retreat with premium loungers, a private bar, and a more peaceful atmosphere.

Guests looking for an elevated experience can also enjoy Silver Cove, where private beachfront villas, an infinity pool overlooking the ocean, exclusive dining, and spa facilities provide a luxurious sanctuary away from the busier parts of the island. Thanks to the island's newly opened two-berth pier, getting ashore is now quicker and easier too, giving guests even more time to enjoy everything Great Stirrup Cay has to offer.

Delicious food with even better views

Days in the sunshine call for great food, and Great Stirrup Cay is introducing a fantastic selection of new dining options alongside its beautiful beaches.

Low Tide Smoke will serve slow-smoked barbecue favourites, including St. Louis-style pork riblets, chicken wings, and loaded nachos, while Catch of the Cay focuses on fresh seafood, from crispy shrimp rolls to chilled seafood baskets. For those with a sweet tooth, Tidal Treats promises handcrafted desserts, colourful bubble waffle sundaes, and tropical fish-shaped waffle cones that are sure to become one of the island's most photographed snacks. And because you're on holiday, there's no need to leave the water when you're ready for a drink. Floataway Bar sits in the heart of The Wandering River, while The Grotto Bar, tucked beneath The Great Slide, offers front-row views of the action as guests take on the island's dramatic cliff jumps.

Why the Douro should be your next river cruise

24 July 2026

River cruising has a wonderful way of slowing the pace of travel, allowing you to truly immerse yourself in a destination rather than simply passing through it. That couldn't have been more true for our Head Office colleague, Janet Whitingham, who recently returned from Riviera Travel's ‘Highlights of the Douro Valley & Salamanca’ itinerary on board MS Riviera Rose. Sailing through one of Europe's oldest wine regions, Janet discovered a journey that combines spectacular scenery, charming riverside towns, exceptional food and wine, and fascinating history - all while unpacking only once.
