My name is Elaine Simpson: I live in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire with my husband, Rod Bailey, who is a retired fine art lecturer. My passion is Australia - I’ve been a Tourism Australia Aussie Specialist for many years, visiting over 20 times; plus I’m a New Zealand Kiwi specialist and an expert in Round the World journeys. Closer to home I love to sail on Star Clippers traditional sailing ships and have crossed the Med with them several times. My 40+ years travel experience started in university travel offices which gave me an unrivalled knowledge of airline and rail routes and off-the-beaten-track destinations, as many of the students and lecturers came from, or travelled to, some far-out places! In 1989 I started my own travel agency for independent travellers and was presented to HRH the Prince of Wales having won a competition for start-up businesses in the Calderdale area. Late in June 2008 I joined Travel Counsellors and closed that business down and – one of the best decisions I have made in my career. I’ve travelled widely throughout Australasia, North America, Asia, Europe, Mexico and South Africa; have specialist accreditations also for Singapore, Hong Kong, Dubai etc, so I can offer a comparable service to all regions with the extensive and highly professional support of Travel Counsellors. I became a Travel Counsellor in 2023 when I started a new chapter in my career after 40 years in hospitality and tourism. Favourite Destination?This one is tough as each holidays are so different but I loved the Maldives for the white sands and for the Marine life watching the Manta Rays gliding around in the water gracefully in the evening was so beautiful, and seeing baby sharks while stood at the water edge! The fish were amazing while snorkelling and beaches are stunning of course! The adventure does start on the seaplane landing on the pristine white beaches which takes your breath away..But also I think Mauritius is just as good and also one of my top sellers .. here you have the advantage of being able to hire a car and explore the island and be totally safe! Here I also sell lots of weddings. I also love the far east for culture and diversity and Thai food! So where will your favourite destination be..? My journey in travel began in 1988 as a YTS trainee at just 17. In September 2000, I became a Travel Counsellor, and I’ve been dedicated to this amazing role for 24 years – which coincides with Travel Counsellors' 30th anniversary. Hi and thank you for taking the time to view my profile.My passion for travel started back in 1993 when after six years of working for National Westminster Bank, I decided I wanted to see the world. I travelled to Africa, India, Nepal, Thailand, Mexico, Guatemala and finally Canada where I stayed for three years working in an art gallery in Toronto, and worked my way across to Vancouver with the same company.On my return to the UK in 1997, I started a position with Fidelity Investments but quickly realised my bug for travel was not satiated and in 1998, embarked on a trip to the Philippines, Fiji and Australia where I worked for St George Bank for nine months. I visited Guatemala for the second time travelling by bus through Mexico up to San Francisco where I stayed for five years. I travelled extensively across the west coast visiting Oregon, Utah, Idaho, Wyoming and Nevada and of all the places I visited, Lake Tahoe is my favourite. I returned to the UK in 2003 and naturally it made perfect sense to me to embark on a career in travel so I joined Flightcentre UK, firstly in the direct stores in New Malden, then moving to Sutton Surrey store where I remained until 2007. I was sent on numerous educational trips to destinations such as South Africa, New Zealand, Rio, New York and countless European countries all of which were fantastic and enabled me to gain an extensive knowledge of how travel operators and hotels work. I am based in Crawley, near Gatwick airport. It is a fantastic location for me, being able to travel into London City, to Brighton for a day by the sea or even hop on a plane to check out a new destination. I live with my partner who works in the hospitality trade and our three young children, twin boys and a girl, who all keep me on my toes.My background started in the hotel sector before getting the travel bug. It all began when working as an international conference and incentive organiser. Arranging large groups of key workers for a trip of a lifetime. It was here I was able to experience cities and various destinations to their full potential.On to the next great adventure - flying, I decided to travel in a different way, as cabin crew. Time to see destinations I would not think to see and expand my knowledge in the aviation world.
